We have a legal system, not a justice system. This series focuses on film as a mirror to a system that systematically fails or impedes those seeking justice. Through humour, drama, and a touch of horror these films grapple with the rule of law, the hunt for a resolution, and whether justice truly exists in a formal legal system.
About the programmer: Austin Leask practices law at a mid-sized civil law firm in Edmonton. He is passionate about access to justice and accessible information and is always excited to discuss the changes needed to improve the transparency and accessibility of our legal system. He hopes this series will get attendees thinking about the issues that plague the pursuit of justice and how art is a critical tool in advocating for a legal system that is equitable, affordable, and just. As a junior in his profession, Austin doesn’t have the free time to attend the Metro as often as he would like, but he considers his silver screen pass to be his most valuable possession.
