Be a Guest Programmer

Do you have a passion for film and a unique programming idea? Are ynowledgeable and enthusiastic about a niche film movement, subgenre, or filmmaker? Metro Cinema is now accepting special events and series submissions for our 2025/2026 Guest Programmer series. A shortlist of successful proposals will be selected by the Metro Cinema Programming Committee to be screened during our 2025/2026 season.

Guidelines

  • Submissions are open only to individuals who live in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • We are seeking proposals for singular themed screenings or limited-run film series. While larger special events and ongoing series will not be considered, curated
screenings with a clear theme are encouraged.
  • Each applicant may submit up to two proposals maximum. If the same individual submits more than two applications, only the first two received will be considered.

An example of a previously selected proposal can be found here.

Guest Programmer Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Metro’s programming manager to finalize the films/activities and schedule.
  • Provide a personal bio and curatorial statement for promotional use.
  • Promote their screening/series through personal networks and social media.
  • Provide live or pre-recorded introduction to contextualize the screening(s).

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on several metrics including, but not limited to:

  • Feasibility: Are the suggested films available for theatrical screening? Are any of the activities cost prohibitive?
  • Programming Balance: Does the idea engage an underserved audience or explore an overlooked area of cinema?
  • Audience Experience: Does the proposal include elements that enhance the filmgoing experience in some way?
  • Contextual Content: Has the applicant demonstrated an ability to contextualize their program in a way that educates and fosters greater appreciation for the artform?

Additional Considerations

  • Selected proposals may need adjustments to align with Metro’s programming schedule, but we will work with you to maintain your vision.
  • Applicants tied to specific dates or seasons are welcome. However, due to limited programming spots, series that have greater scheduling flexibility may be prioritized.
  • Programs that have a clear start and end point and can be presented in a calendar month will be prioritized. Proposals for ongoing or reoccurring series are not being considered through this process.
  • Submissions from filmmakers to screen their own work will not be considered. For details on how to showcase your own films, contact info@metrocinema.org
  • Submissions from businesses and organizations for singular special events will not be considered as part of this process. Please visit our facility rentals page for more information, or contact info@metrocinema.org to learn about how we could collaborate with your organization.
  • Due to the volume of films Metro presents, and the number of applications we receive, there may be times where regular Metro programming resembles a rejected application. Such situations are coincidental and unavoidable.

Volunteer Position

This is a volunteer opportunity. Selected guest programmers will receive recognition as Metro volunteers and enjoy associated benefits such as society membership, admission passes and access to special screenings.
