Movie musicals can be much more than belting ballads and large dance numbers! They can be horrors, screwball comedies, or grueling tragedies in addition to the technicolor spectacles which we’re most familiar with. Spanning multiple decades and languages, the musical has been an essential tool for filmmakers; grabbing an audience’s attention with a large dance number, a heartfelt love duet, and stylized acting inspired from the stage which leaves all subtly behind.
About the programmer:
Kalen Sabasch originally from Red Deer, but currently living in Edmonton is an undergrad student at the UofA working towards a BA Honours degree in Drama with a minor in Political Science. Despite working in live theatre Kalen holds the medium of film near and dear and hopes to bridge the gap between the two with “Subverting the Movie Musical”. If found at the Metro Cinema or the Fine Arts Building at the UofA, Kalen will engage in a serious discussion about the live action adaptation of CATS by Andrew Llyod Webber.
