Follow the evolving influence movies have had on queer culture in North America through a series showcasing films from the 1950s to the 1990s. Featuring powerhouses of Hollywood, and a wealth of gay icons, this series shows how culture and queerness grew increasingly intertwined through the medium of film. Queer patrons and performers alike have found inspiration from certain movies. If you are ready for your close-up, or prepared to throw shade, come see how movies shaped the emergent queer culture of the late-twentieth century, and also how queerness, in turn, influenced film, as well as the broader American culture.
About the programmer: Dr. K.D. Burton is an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Alberta where she teaches courses on the history of sexuality (as well as classes on the history of drugs, alcohol, and other fun topics). Combined with her personal love of films, especially those from the “Golden Age” of Hollywood, and the ruptures that followed the end of the Hays Code, this series on film, culture, and queerness brings together topics that make her nerdy heart sing. She joined the Metro Cinema fundraising committee in 2024, and she is a strong advocate for the protection and preservation of local, independent theatres.
