From Turtle Island to Gaza to Cuba

The Edmonton Peace Council, Climate Justice Edmonton and The Salvador Allende Foundation Edmonton present From Turtle Island to Gaza to Cuba–Solidarity with Cuba.

On July 26th, experience two short films from renowned Cuban American Film-makers Belly of the Beast in celebration of more than 30 years of Canadian solidarity with Cuba. Since 1993, the Canadian Network on Cuba has sent Canadians on solidarity brigades in support of Cuba. In 2025, four Edmontonians took part in the brigade. Local organizer Adama Bundu connected with Belly of the Beast to premier two of their short films in Canada. Cuba is known for her humanism, resilience and creativity—especially in the face of a brutal blockade placed on the small Caribbean country by imperialist America. Organizers are proud to present these films, as well as share insights and reflections from their time on the brigade.

Meanwhile, Cuba (called a State Sponsor of Terrorism by the U.S.) is training hundreds of Palestinian doctors, many from Gaza, for free at its Latin American School of Medicine. One of them is Murid Abukhater, a Palestinian medical student from Gaza at Cuba’s Latin American School of Medicine. Murid remembers his home every time he looks at the ocean. While his family and friends face the daily onslaught of Israel’s bombing, Murid attempts to focus on his studies so he can one day fulfill his dream of returning to Gaza as a doctor to help save lives.”
