Before the introduction of the Hays code in 1934, a period of unrestrained experimental filmmaking took Hollywood by storm. The ‘pre-code’ era of horror films made in the early 1930s are known for their dark atmospheres, psychosexual themes, and brutal creativity; as such, many titles were banned and forcibly cut down to comply with the new censorship laws of the Hays code due to their ‘immorality’. Despite their heavy censorship, the pre-code era pioneered both new sound filmmaking techniques and the horror genre, continuing to captivate audiences ninety years later.

About the Programmer: Currently entering her fourth year of her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Brooklynn Soppet is an Edmonton based Videographer, Camera Assistant, and lover of cinematic history. Not to brag or anything, but she boasts a large collection of physical media with a passion for VHS. One of her favourite things and current mission is to find obscure titles and hopefully introduce them to a new audience of film lovers, strongly believing that no film deserves to be buried. And really, she ought to do something with all her film trivia!
