In Parentheses brings together photography, moving image, and captioned language as parallel systems of notation. Rather than reproducing sensory experience, each proposes an encounter with what cannot be fully preserved. Together, landscape photographs, isolated captions, and a nearly imperceptible video become adjacent attempts to trace atmosphere, sound, memory, and place, inviting viewers to imagine what exceeds the limits of both image and language.
Steph Patsula is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in Edmonton, Alberta. Working across photography, sound, performance, and lens-based media, their practice considers how images, language, and acts of notation shape our understanding of memory, atmosphere, and place. Through photographs, recordings, scores, and installations, they explore the spaces between experience and its documentation, often treating visual and sonic materials as parallel systems of translation.
Patsula holds an MFA in Sound from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in Intermedia from the University of Alberta. Their interdisciplinary practice has been presented through exhibitions, performances, and site-responsive projects across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Iceland.
